Can a goldfish spawn itself to ...DEATH?

kazoo Jul 25, 2005 09:50 AM

I...almost....wish mine would. From the original batch in my outdoor "bathtub" pond, ONE is a female. She spawns weekly. Sometimes every 2-3 days. The other fish keep her on top of the plants and OUT OF THE WATER nearly constantly.
And she keeps on spawning.
ONE baby survived from last year's thousands of eggs. Now this year, I notice ANOTHER small one scuttling on the bottom. This one is brown, but I have heard that goldfish sometimes color up AFTER some time.
At any rate, this constant SLOSHING and THRASHING has certainly ended the pond as a RELAXING thing to watch.
I'm tempted to "remove" her but just can't do it. I figure it HAS to wear out ....someday.
But WILL it?

if you want her to die then yes keep her there. the best thing you can do is to at least take her out and put her somewhere where she can recover. if you dont want her then sell her on or take her to an lfs. as for the brown fish, they colour up at about a year old.

What's an LFS? I assume the S is for sanctuary. ???
She seems to take it just fine. She's back feeding and normal as soon as it's over. They DID kill one of the originals who did NOT like anything to do with the whole thing. In fact, she was gone on her FIRST spawn. Found her being so battered up that she had to be destroyed. They bounce them around like beach balls and she was gone in the AM.
Should the present one go if it doesn't seem to bother her?
My gripe is that the tub is so turmoiled so often.
But if they are having fun, why bother em?
Whaddya think?

Weird thing about the brown one. The FIRST surviving baby was gold from the get-go. First noticed him/her as a gold STREAK about a quarter inch long.
I had always HEARD that they take a while to color up. I have NO idea where the seemingly SINGLE fry might hide to get so big before coming out. ONE a year seems strange. Especially after so much spawning.

lfs is local fish shop.
its up to you if you want to see her get like this every week or two. it obviously bothers you or you wouldnt have posted about it. seems like you have too many males and the better choice would be to get rid of some of the males first or if you have plenty of room, get more females.

Well, scratch local fish shop. NONE want a...goldfish.
It was bugging me from the turmoil, but I guess it isn't hurting the fish any. Yesterday they were at it hot and furious and by noon, Mama was first at the food.
Think I'll just let nature do what happens. I did get a perforated plastic tub that is big enough for her and floats, but she doesn't put up with net chasing either.
Gotta relax about it..... OMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm.
