gold fish color?

jhosta Sep 07, 2005 05:30 PM

hi,i am new to the forum.
we have had 8 gold fish for 5 years. i bring them into the green house in the winter.they live in a large plastic tub.
outside they have always been in a smallpond.it is really a big black pot that was once used to make soap.i put a liner in it and a pump and added the 23 cent gold fish and 2 fan tail $1.19 from wal mart.
3 years ago i made a small pond at the back of the hosta garden.this spring i dug it 5 times bigger than it was and added the fish from their small pond.
about a month after i put the fish in this bigger pond i noticed small fish.fry i guess they are called.i thought there were a few.i took 14 out and put them where the bigger fish had been in the black pot.i thought i got most of the fry out of the big pond.
that is not the case. there are a lot of fish.they are mostly dark.they have grown and i have some that are about 2 inchs long.
my question is

Will the fish turn color?

the babies keep hatching.i have tiny fish up to the ones that are 2 inchs long.
the fan tail fish has always been heavy with eggs.you can see them through her belly.the fry are not fan tails.she always looks ready to pop but never seems to lay the eggs.
i am really new to this pond/fish thing.

It sure sounds like you have quite a population explosion! Most likely they will change color as they get older.

What are you going to do with all these fish?

thank you.i'm glad they will turn color someday.
as for what i'm going to do with all these fish?
i have NO idea.maybe put a sign up in the yard FREE FISH!
today i finally saw one tiny fry with color.i am going to try to catch him, when the pond gets a bit lower.
we had a 2 inch rain today.the ponds over flow worked really well thank goodness.
