Gold FIsh Breeding

whitespider Sep 17, 2005 04:36 PM

I was wondering how you go about breeding goldfish? I know it's damn near impossible to figure out their sexes before they are near breeding time. So, I was wonder what I should do if I want to breed them? Since the idea sounds interesting and I might try it when my new pond is finnished. Thanks for any info.

If you have a male and female then the chances are that the bigger the pond the better. Spring is the time the water starts to warm up and the females will start to fatten out. In the late spring they will mate and you wil need to provide lots of vegetation for them. It can take a few years though or if you are lucky and the fish are old enough it may happen in the first year. You just have to be patient.

i have 8 gold fish that are 5 years old.they have always been in a small pond.this year i dug my pond bigger.they swam in a school for the first time.fun to watch.that must have been when they were mateing.
they have produced many many off spring.
most are still dark but 2 have turned the most beautiful orange.they are about 2 inchs long.there are others that are just as big but they are not changing color.
there are tiny fry in the shallow end of the pool so they must have laid eggs more than once.
