Heating outdoor fish ponds

andrewreefer Oct 02, 2005 08:22 PM

My cousin has a 700- 1000 gallon pond in Memphis TN. He wants to heat it in order to keep tetras, and other tropicals year round. Is this a pipe dream or will a 1000 watt heater keep the tempature tropical during the winter?

Memphis winters can be mild or wild. It can get several degrees below 0 or barely freeze at all. On the average it does get pretty cold, just not for months at a time. Personally, I wouldn't try it but it might work. Also, a pond that size would probably require more then one heater to keep the temperature even thru out. He should really talk to one of the local fish stores that deal with ponds.

Hi,

That's a tall order. If the average winter temp in TN is 41 degrees, and tropicals are most comfortable at 70-75, you're talking about keeping 1000 gals of water 30 degrees above ambient at best. Obviously, there will be colder days. I don't think a single 1k heater will do. Another thought; that 1k heater will be running 24-7 all winter. $$$$$

Tell your cousin to round 'em up & bring them inside.
