Safe to Touch Goldfish?

love1221 Apr 01, 2006 08:44 PM

I have two goldfish. Today while I was cleaning the tank one of the goldfish swam up and touched my hand with his mouth. He kind of let me rub on his side. Is it safe to touch goldfish or not? The other goldfish is rather large. Recently he has developed a place on his side that looks like a "stretch mark"...it is a place where there are no fins and it just looks stretched out...what is it?

As a general rule it really isn't the best thing to touch your fish as it can rub off their protective slime coat. An occasional touch or bump won't really do any damage, though. The only time I do it on purpose is if the fish is sick, lethargic and I don't want to net him, as he would be more used to my hand in the tank than a giant green net.
As for the "stretch mark" do you have a photo?

No, I don't have a picture. But, it is now more like a brownish colored bump.
