String algae - How do I get rid of?

mroe May 09, 2006 10:15 PM

I live in Phoenix Arizona and have two ponds, one in my front yard and one in back, both get partial shade. They both have lilys and fish and a good filter, I use the bio-additive to try and control the front pond that has un-controled string algae. The water is clear, but sting algae everywhere. I just can't seem to get a handle on what to do. My back pond is crystal clear and no algae. Someone suggested an ultra-viloet filter for the front pond. Will that kill all the string algae? If so I'll buy one tomorrow, anyone else have any ideas?

A UV clarifier will not get rid of string algae. Remove as much string algae as you can from the pond then use an algaecide such as algaefix. Be careful, read the instructions and use the correct amount. Add it in the morning. I have been using it for years and it works great. It will take about 4 applications. After the second application, the string algae will start turning white. By the fourth application it will dissolve.

Welcome.

This is prolly the best way and easiest to get rid of all algea.
I found it on ebay, seems to be a really good price.

The way to get rid of string algae or suspended algae is to make a biological filter or increase the size of the filter you already have. Filtration systems at the bottom of a pond is only mechanical. Check out our clubs website at: www.geocities.com/ont_pondkeper and look in the water condition section to show you how to make your own.

I had a pond with a similar problem. I found great use using a product called Captain. It is relatively easy to use. It can be found from a company called SePRO Corporation.

Here is the website:

Good Luck!
