Pond filter problems

britonk Jul 06, 2006 11:38 AM

Hi,

Can anyone help me? I have a raised pond (rectangle built with bricks) which is approximately 2000 litters. It’s been fine for a while but recently the filter has started to become full every single day.

I don’t think I am over-feeding the fish as I am feeding them very little once a day – there are approximately 15 fish in the pond. Approximately half the pond has Lilly pads on it for appropriate shading (as I hear this is important).

The filter in place is an 8W Fishmate UV combined filter. It is recommended for ponds up to 3000 litters so it should be substantial enough.

Does anyone have any ideas why the filter might be getting so dirty so quickly?

Thanks,

Brian

What color is your filter when you clean it? Is it green? If so, it is algae. Do you change your 8 watt UV bulb once a year? If not, that is why the algae is not being killed.
What size is your pump? If it is too strong, the water will flow through the UV too fast and the algae will not be destroyed.

Hi - the colour of the dirt on the filter is brown do you know what causes this? I havn't changed the UV tube I thought this would only need doing once it stopped working?

I don't know much about ponds - this one came with the house along with the fish in it. I am getting quite into it though and would like to learn more.

Thanks for your help
