where do the frogs go in wintertime?

myfivesons Aug 20, 2006 09:51 AM

my husband is making a new bigger pond about 75 feet from our old pond which has some really big beautiful frogs in it but my [his question is where do they go in the winter time?

if he tears down the old one will he disturb their winter habitat ? will they know to go to the new pond or should he just wait till next spring?

thanks for any input,

kelly

if they are big, and truly frogs, most will find somewhere under water to hibernate. i'd suggest waiting till spring, we are redoing our frog pond currently. if they find the pond, and it's deep enough, they should be fine.

I am not sure if they will move or not , but I know my frogs hibernate under the stuff at the bottom, when fall comes I usually let the leaves and stuff stay there, so it builds up a little and they have something to go under, then in fall just clean it out, but not early because the new babys, are usually in there to and get caught in the cleaning and tossed, so I wait till I see some of the tadpoles and then clean out a week or 2 later, looking in the net for the tadpoles. good luck
