Fish in Outdoor Ponds Throughout Winter

colorfulcritters Oct 18, 2007 06:38 AM

I built a pond about 18" deep and 5' in diameter. Well, this winter I'm leaving my fish in there. I want to know how often you should feed the fish throughout winter if they're in outdoor ponds?

Thing is, the temps where I live don't get below freezing. They dip into the 30's but never below. I live in Southwest Florida, USA, so ice doesn't form and it never snows. I wonder, then, how much goldfish eat during the winter or if they will kind of hibernate?

Hi, did you ever get an answer about winterizing your pond? I live in Dunnellon, FL and this is my first pond and wanted to know pretty much the same info that you asked about. I know in the north you need to get rid of your floating plants, but I got mine out of our local river so I'm wondering if they will survive the winter down here. If you got any answers or if you found out by going through winters down since your post in 2007 here, what we need to do? Will you please share the info with me too? Thanks, Misty
