Miner's cat or ringtailed cat

mbradley Dec 09, 2008 09:29 AM

Hi my name is Michelle. I live in Florida. I am looking for information on Miner's cats sometimes called ringtail cats. I understand that they are related to raccoons. Do they do well in captivity? I understand that most raccoons never do very well in captivity. I have some experience with exotics. I fostered a vixen for 3 months. I also had a striped skunk Blossom Nibbles who I adored. She had a massive stroke and died despite the best efforts of my vet. I am not ready to adopt another skunk. It would not be fair to the new skunk as I would always be comparing it to Blossom. However I do miss having an exotic. I am hoping that a Miner's cat would be a good fit.

Ringtail cats are very neat little animals. They're the smallest of the raccoon family and if hand raised can make wonderful easy going pets. I used to own a trio of them but none of them were tame. Although they weren't tame they were still very neat, they were either parent raised or wild caught I'm not sure which because I got them when they were already fully grown and didn't have much history on them. After a while they got where they didn't mind me being in their cage with them and they'd come up to me and take food out of my hand and let me pet them a little bit. But they'd also bite my feet if I tried to move too fast while I was in their enclosure and growl and make aweful noises at me if they got scared lol. I would LOVE to get a tame ringtail kit, if you know someone that has some I would love their information.
