Cross breeding?

Will northern and southern flying squirrels cross breed? I have a male northern and a female southern, both seemed lonely so I put them in the same cage, as I didn't think they'd cross breed. Now my female is looking rather plump so to speak and I am wondering if they did cross breed. I was wondering if this was possible, or has my female just gained extra weight this summer??
