Another dumped rabbit...

Hollychan Oct 26, 2009 02:39 PM

We found a little rabbit in our front yard today. This is not the first time a domestic rabbit has been dumped near here, and I'm sure it won't be the last. We live in a very rural area and our neighbors have the bad habit of dumping pets quite frequently, even dogs. I never know which animal came from which neighbor (not that I would want to give the animal back to them). This little guy appears pretty sick, dehydrated, and starved. I have no clue when it was dumped. I've put "her" into a small airline box that we had for my cat. I put bedding down, a small bowl with food, a water bottle, etc. She's just laying on her side, breathing heavily. I found a local vet who does take care of rabbits, so I'm taking her in this afternoon to find out if she'll be okay or what. I think she was attacked by one of the feral cats around here, she has a couple of spots that are probably wounds from claws. She drank some water already, but hasn't done more than that. If the vet says she's going to survive, then I plan to get her healthy, then ask through my friends to see if anyone wants an adorable rabbit. At least that way I can be certain she will go to a good home. I have enough pets as it is, and can't quite add to the menagerie yet, or I'd keep her.

I'll post pictures later, if the vet gives her any chance at all to live. For all I know, she may have distemper if she was out loose during the storms and cold weather we had last week.

I just got a call from the vet. They were going to keep the bunny overnight because he was in shock from the cat attack. He passed away a couple of hours ago. Poor little guy. Now to pay the vet bills, sheesh. O.o

Always so sad to hear of bunnies getting attacked. Usually Cats hurt them internally. Sorry you have to feel so badly. I have been there plenty of times.

Take care
