help! my rabbit just passed away

karen_5220 Dec 20, 2009 10:15 AM

I need help in trying to figure out why my animals died. I had 2 guinea pigs die and now my bunny. We had the guinea pigs for about 2 years. About a month ago the one suddenly started losing weight, had diarrea, would not eat or drink, was lethargic. As quick as these symptoms started she died in 2 days. Within one week the other one died. They were not housed together, but were in the same room. A week after both pigs died we bought a bunny. We cleaned the one cage out very good and housed the bunny in the cage in the same room where the pigs were kept. We only had her for 2 weeks when suddenly she had the same symptoms. Weeping eyes with a white substance oozing out, very small poop pellets, not eating or drinking and lethargic. As quickly as it started it took her within a day. I didn't have a chance to even get her to the vets! Help! What could be going on to cause this? My family is very upset and are looking for answers. We are afraid to bring another pet into the house without finding the source of this problem.

Karen-
let me start by saying I am sorry for your losses. It is hard to tell what may have been going on, but with the nasal discharge it sounds like Upper Respiratory Infection may have played at least a part in their passings. Perhaps contacting a small anima vet for advice would be the next best step at this point. They can give you a clearer picture of what may have happened, and can help you to clean properly before bringing another animal into your home. Again, sorry about your losses.
