Which fruits/veggies should I NOT feed?

hlynn1975 Aug 28, 2009 01:13 AM

I got a female Syrian Hamster two weeks ago. I make sure she always has a full dish of seed and 2-3 times a week I'm giving her fruits and veggies. I have found a bunch of sites that mention some good things to feed them but I can't find anything that says if any fruits/veg are bad for hamsters. I know apple seeds and peach pits are bad but is there anything else I should avoid feeding her? I know dogs shouldn't have grapes and onions, does the same hold true for hamsters? I just want to make sure I don't accidentally poison her.

Also, can I feed her cooked veggies? I buy a lot of the mixed bags of veggies for myself and was wondering if I could just take a pea or carrot or something out of the mix after I've cooked it and give it to her (after it cools down of course) or if I should take one out before cooking and let it thaw.

Thanks for the help.
Heather

HI,
FIRST THING TO CHANGE WOULD BE THE SEED MIXTURE TO PELLETS, THE BEST BRAND RIGHT NOW FOR SMALL RODENTS IS OXBOW HEALTHY HANDFULS,OR WHAT EVER YOU COULD FIND NEAR YOU ASK A EXOTIC VET WHAT HE IS SELLING.THEY ALSO LAST LONGER AND IN THE LONG RUN YOU SAVE MOBNEY. THE SEEDS WILL MAKE YOUR HAMSTER GAIN WEIGHT,WHICH IS HARD ON THE INTERNAL ORGANS. OFFER HAY(EVERYDAY),PELLETS(AS MAIN DIET),HALF A TEASPOON OF SEED MIXTURE ONLY ONCE A WEEK OR EVERY SECOND WEEK.FRIUTS AND VEGGIES ONLY 1/2 TEASPOON A DAY.REMEMBER TO REMOVE FOOD WITHEN THE DAY OTHERWISE IF HOT THE FOOD COULD GET MOLDY AND BACTERIA ALSO WILL FORME ON IT.
APPLE(NO SEEDS)CARROTS,ORANGES,BROCCOLI,DARK GREEN LEAFY VEGGIES ETC
DO NOT FEED: GRAPES OR DRIED GRAPES,GARLIC,ONIONS, FRUIT PITS AND SEEDS,CAUILFLOWER,PRUNES(COULD CAUSE CONSTPTION).REMOVE ALL SKINS FROM HARD TO DIGEST FRUITS LIKE PEACHES AND NECTORINES ETC

MAKE THE TRANSION FROM SEEDS TO PELLETS,TAKE ABOUT 2 WEEKS SO THAT IT WILL NOT CAUSE THE RUNS,ALSO INTRODUCE ANY NEW FOODS IN THAT WAY. RAW VEGGIES IS BETTER BUT WASH THEM WELL.
I HOPE ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION.
