What kind of fish is this???

icedearthgoddess Mar 13, 2010 01:09 PM

I have acquired this beautiful specimen from a pet shop, and I am trying to figure out what he/she is. Bought him/her from a Leporinus fasciatus tank, but I can't seem to find anything on this fish... I really don't think he is a Leporinus fasciatus. He is currently about 3" in length, and a voracious eater. His striping on the top of his body seems to change from very dark to very light. He has three distinct spots on his body. One at the gill, one in the middle of his body and one at the tail. These markings are identical on each side. That's about all I know. Any help would be great. Here is his picture:

I agree, I don't think it is a Leporinus fasciatus (banded leporinus). I couldn't find a picture of a juvenile Leporinus fasciatus, and I counted the bands and there are 9 that I can count. The three spots are visible in the picture too, but I think that makes it a different fish. I don't recognize the fish, so I've promoted your post to see what others think. It will bring more attention to your post. Your fish is quite the little cutie, so I hope we can identify it for you. Maybe you could tell us what the caudal fin (tail) looks like since it's not completely clear in the picture. Looks to me like it's forked.

What are you feeding it, and what all have you tried feeding it? Perhaps the diet could help too.

The caudal fin is a heart shape, yes it is forked. He/she is eating Omega One brand flake food for tropical fish, and loves Algae Wafers also by Omega One. Does not seem picky with anything offered. Enjoys Bloodworms, Brine Shrimp, and Shrimp Pellets. I hope someone can tell me what he/she might be. I researched the Banded Leporinus and they are "born" banded with 5 bands, all fairly wide and then as they grow the bands split into other bands and having 7 bands by three years of age.

It seems pretty healthy so that's a great thing. Such a beautiful specimen of whatever it happens to be. Like I said, I don't think it is the Banded Leporinus.

Are there any other sites that you know of that someone might be able to identify this fish??? I really would like to know if there is anything special I need to do water quality wise, diet wise, etc. Thanks.

Not really, but you can look around.

Good luck.

He is an Anostomus trimaculatus. I found him by researching the Abramites hypselontus. Pretty cool!!!! Here is the picture I found of someone else's:
