Fry born with egg/yolk?

merlin7676 Mar 03, 2008 06:25 PM

My female is giving birth.. I saw one come out but it was tan and round...so didn't look like a fry or a poo...she turned directly around and ate it...so I kept watching and saw a fry so I quickly put her into the breeder box....well I found a fry in the tank that looked like it had a tan round thing attached to it..is that the yolk? Are they normally born that way? Today is day 25 so I knew she was due any day now but I haven't seen/heard anything about this

Congratulations! It could be, but I'm not sure if the food supply while in the mother is supplied by the mother or a yolk sac. It could be an unfertilized egg stuck to the fry. They are not normally born that way. They're usually born with their tail tucked close to their face for a couple of seconds then the open their tail and swim away. How many do you have?

She had 7 that I know for sure...but I only managed to save 2 from her mouth..her last batch I only know that she had 2 and they were born normal...all 7 that she had this time we born with yolk sacs so they aren't just attached. The 2 I saved are swiming a bit but you can tell that they are heavy with the sac and one I see will "roll" over on it's side or front. However this morning they did seem smaller so maybe they are absorbing them?

Maybe she got stressed, and had them early?

I'm sure not...she was at day 25 which is exactly the right time..I read that they deliver anywhere from day 21 to 28. In any case, one is missing. Where or how I'm not sure as there is no way it could have gotten out of the breeder box, but it is gone. The other one is absorbing the yolk; there is only a little bit left this morning. So I guess I will just chalk it up to a unique experience!

Yes, I would say it is a very unique experience. I've bred my guppies for a year and I've never encountered it. (I had to give them away so I could relocate). Hmm. That's odd that one is lost. Are you going to move the fry to another tank?
