Ammonia just won't go away

merlin7676 May 22, 2008 11:13 PM

So I recently just had a major die off..as in all but 3 fish in my tank....all my water levels were fine..although the ammonia is on the high side..but it always has been. Even water that I tested directly from the tap shows high ammonia. Can that be correct? Isn't ammonia in tap water BAD? I got some ammonia blocker that was supposed to bind to and neutralize ammonia..I put the recommended amount in my tank and nothing..figured since everything was dead anyway I'd add more..put 1, then 2 doses more in..still nothing..does this make sense?

Your water quality was good when you had a die off? That doesn't sound right. If you lost a lot of fish there are only 2 possibilities: 1) ich, 2) ammonia poisoning.
The ammonia is supposed to go to 0 before you add any fish. You should only add 2-3 fish at a time to start an aquarium. You have to do a lot of water changes and wait for the bacteria to establish themselves.
Have you tested the water you treated with the ammonia remover? If even that is bad, I would suggest using spring water in your tank.
If all of your fish are dead, then you should just let you tank sit until you get the ammonia under control.
