Jewel with bloated, white belly.

dedfishdontfloat Jun 16, 2008 04:53 PM

My Jewel cichlid pretty much runs my tank, but today I noticed his stomach was white and really swollen. I put melafix in the tank but i have no idea what this could be. Does anybody know? Thanks.

Pregnancy? Do you know what their reproductive style is (i.e.: mouth brooders, egg depositers, etc.)? If not, let me know and I'll find out for you.
Oh, I will ask on the chat tonight for you and see if my cichlid expert might know.

I found out for you. They are egg layers. Both the parents are very protective of the young. Do you have both sexes? Or just a female? Females can produce eggs without a male partner, but they will of course be unfertilized. Also, if it is not pregnancy it could be constipation. If you wanted to see if that is the cause, just toss a couple peas in your tank (they might float or they might sink). It acts as fiber for your fish so it won't hurt it if it is not constipated.
