Creek fish with teeth, what is this fish

kellywood23 Oct 01, 2008 10:11 AM

Hey guys,

I thought this fish to be a sucker, but after catching it, I know that it is not. I also noticed that it has teeth.

Would anyone know what it is?

Thanks,

Kelly

My guess is some sort of sea robin, I say that because of the general shape of the fish. However, I'm not sure if sea robins have teeth. They are usually estuarine fishes, but I'm not sure how low the salinity can be for them to tolerate. I will also promote your post to see if anyone can specifically identify your fish.

Thanks Phishie,

I found out that the fish in question is called a Banded Sculpin. (cottus carolinae) It inhabits spring fed creeks and feeds on larva and such. It is also loved by trout.

Thanks again and hopefully, if anyone else finds one of these, this post can help them.

I'm happy you found out what the fish was. I was way off. I am pretty good at identifying fish too. Missed that one though. Can't win them all I guess. Thanks for the help for others.
