I have a bichir that I've had for about 8 months now. Recently it hasn't been swimming around much and is mostly floating at the top. It has been doing this for about 1-2 weeks.

Hi. Do you know what your DO (dissolved oxygen) levels are? Usually when fish are at the top of the water column, they are needing more oxygen.

I don't know what the DO levels are, but we have an air stone in the tank. I don't know if that is important though. It has been behaving normally for 2 days now. It wasn't 'gasping' last time, so I have no idea what was up. Thanks.

The air stone definitely helps oxygen levels... it's probably not low DO then. As long as everything is normal, everything should be fine, but if you have any other troubles just let me know. I'm sorry I haven't been able to help very much with the gourami or your bichir.
