dividing a tank?

gapeachnow25 Mar 12, 2009 12:57 PM

ok, so i've got these two bettas, manny (who's still doing very well) and spunk (formerly c-thu) who's also doing well. they're both in one gallon bowls and now i'm wanting to get a tank and divide it. nothing too large, probably a 5 or 10 gallon tank... my questions are... how do i go about dividing this tank so the water flows freely (don't want to use a non-porous divider), and also, will i absolutely have to go through this nitrogen cycle? if i set up the tank and all the parameters are correct, shouldn't i be able to add them as long as i keep checking the water?

Check your local fish store. They should have mesh dividers. I would probably split a 10 gallon, and put plants by the divider so they wouldn't get stressed from seeing each other. You will have to cycle your tank again, but if you use the water they are currently in, it will jump start the cycling process. You could also purchase some biospira (you may need to order online) which is a bacterial additive (good bacteria) that can also help jump start your cycling process. Once you get past the cycling process, you should be doing water changes every 2 weeks (20%).
