Overly territorial male

smalltimefisher May 10, 2009 11:10 PM

My male is REALLY mean to my two females. He makes them just sit on the bottom and if they swim around to top or within his sight he just chases them to the bottom. Is this normal? I'm afraid he is going to kill them.

You are typically supposed to have a 3:1 ratio (of females to males) so the females don't get picked on too much. How big is your tank? That also may have something to do with the aggressive behaviors.

It's only a 5.5 Gallon, so really don't want to add more fish to it. Although on of the females did die this morning. Cottonmouth, but I suspect she had it from the fish store. I'll just keep an eye on them I guess, because I really don't have the possibility of doing a qt tank.

Yeah I wouldn't add anymore fish then. Your deceased female very well could have got it from the pet store. They tend to be over stressed there.
