What filter for a 55gal

Ok it's been awhile since I've had a fish tank. I purchased a 55gal on craigslist and it came with an undergravel and a whisper60. Now my question is, is the undergravel even necessary and will the whisper be powerful enough for this tank? If not what filtration would you reccommend? I plan on putting South American ciclids in it. Any help would be appreciated.
