Hello, child's first fish....

kilhd Dec 08, 2010 08:09 AM

My daughter just turned 3 years and her grandpa got her a small tank (maybe 5 gallon) and some rocks. She wants to go pick out a fish but I wanted to find out some info first. So I have a few questions for you experts. The tank does Not have a filter or air pump so..
What's a hearty fish(that's not too expensive) and doesn't need pump?
What's a good product to use to remove chlorine and make the water right?
What's a good fish for a 3yr old child in general?

Thanks all for reading and any information.

Bettas are hardy and would be quite happy in a small (5 gallon ish) tank. They are relatively cheap (depending on what you consider cheap) like $3. They can live for 5 years, I believe, but of course all animals can outlive the average given proper care and good health.

A smaller tank doesn't give you too many options as far as hardy fish go. Goldfish are another option. They produce more ammonia than the average fish, so one is good. Although I would say a filter would be better for a goldfish.

That's all I can think of at the moment that would be happy in a smaller tank and doesn't need a filter.

Thanks for the info.
I was thinking exactly that... Betta, or Goldfish. (going to try to talk her into betta when we go to choose one)
