PLEASE HELP WITH MY DUNCAN CORAL

lisa_marie May 21, 2009 09:42 PM

Im like 5months into the reef aquarium. I have several corals, and 7 fish...none that are really large, except my yellow tang. I just got a duncan coral, well, actually I bought it like last Sunday. The guy at the pet store said they are pretty hardy. I bought one with three heads on it. It was fully opened in the store, brought it home, placed it under a little ledge I seen, that was the perfect spot, or at least I thought it was. I waited a few days like two and one was trying to open up and he would go right back in. Im thinking this little guy is not happy here so I placed him in the sand bed near a rock, he tries to come out but still is not happy. What am I doing wrong with this coral. I do not want it to die, if it does not get fed Im sure he`s going to die. I feed my corals a product called fuel by seachem, they said it was an awesome product, so I buy it. My duncan coral was not attached to a frag rock when I got it, does it need to be on a frag rock? Please help with the coral I love the coral it is very pretty and would love to have more if possible. The Man at the lfs says the more coral in the tank the less parasites I will have, is this true? All my fish seem to be doing fine so far. I have 80g canister for my 75g. two hydro pumps and two power heads I just bought a refugium and have no instructions on how to hook it all up. This one sits under the tank I just read what the benifits are from having one now I dont know what to do with it since I got it. Can any one tell me how to hook it up to my tank? Thanks for any help given.

I wish I knew how to help you, but unfortunately I have no experience with corals. The most I can do at this point is give you a care sheet link. I also did some research on the web about them, and there is conflicting information. Some sites say low flow and others say medium to high. I would try each of the flow areas (low, medium, and high) to see which it prefers. If flow is too high for its liking it won't open (that goes for most filter-feeders). Here's this link for the duncan coral care sheet (http://www.asira.org/duncans)
I wouldn't believe everything the pet stores tell you. I've heard many false statements from pet stores both in person and on here. I would say the chances of parasites are the same no matter how many corals you have or fish for that matter. Unless one of your organisms bring in a parasite, the chances of increased parasites, I think, is unlikely.
As for your refugium, I have a link for you below. Hope this helps.
