People asking about Freshwater Seahorses

jusmebabe Jun 01, 2009 02:08 PM

Back around '85 I used to read Archie comics. They use to have a sectiion where you could order different gadgets. They also had where you could order seahorses. I do recall odering them and receiving them. They were small maybe dwarf I don't know.
I remember keeping them in freshwater (ad didn't say saltwater) tank and they lived quite awhile of course they died likely due to poor diet (didn't know better at the time).
The reason I mention this is people inquiring about freshwater seahorses and until about a year ago I didn't know there weren't freshwater seahorses..
Just thought I would throw that in.

Yes, there are no freshwater seahorses. There are pipefish that can live in brackish waters, but still require some salt. Your seahorses you had previously could have died because they weren't in saltwater when they needed to be and/or poor diet.

Unless they could survive 3 months in freshwater I don't think it was that. It was the poor diet I gave them.. I wish I had learned about them first but at 14 I was impulsive.

The good news is that you learned from your mistake.

there is a species of freshwater seahorse living in lake titicaca. they are very enigmatic, and after doing a little research, i didnt find any proof that they still existed after the 1940's. but who knows.
