How would I go about?

galaciel21 Apr 16, 2008 01:44 PM

My sister has two Blue Throated Macaws she is looking to get rid. They are a male and female about 4 years in age or so.

She left me in charge of finding someone who would be willing to buy them somewhat locally but she doesn't want to put an add in the paper. I tried doing an online search but can't seem to come up with anything unless I'm not using the correct terms.

Other then just offering to the general public, does anyone know who would be interested in buying them? I don't think Pet Stores would but, perhaps a breeder will? I tried suggesting she talk to the place she got them from but she claims she wants to explore her other options first.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Have you checked to see if you have a local or somewhat local bird club. If you do, you should be able to find people with interest in that kind of bird and knowledgeable enough to care for them whether they would be hobbyists, breeders etc. Another option might be to go to your closest avian vet and let him/her know that you are wanting to sell/rehome them and see if they would spread the word or if they know of someone who might be interested. Also if they are actual blue throated and not blue and gold macaws a zoo may be interested in them but only with a clean bill of health and they may want them donated not to buy them. What state or city etc are you located in, maybe I could suggest someone near you that could help.

Thanks for responding. Yes, they are actually Blue Throated. She does have a Blue and Gold which she is going to keep. I thought about the local and surrounding Zoos but they only accept donations. I am located in Southern NJ. There is a Bird Club but from what I saw on their site, birds are only put up for adoption. I'll throw the idea out to her about the Vet (she wasn't an Avian though) as she tried to do all she could when one of my sister's previous Blue and Golds was sick before she had her go to University of Pennsylvania. From working in a Pet Store that carried a few exotic birds, they just aren't really in demand in my area which makes it hard trying to find someone reliable to want to purchase and take care of them.
