Amazon in bad shape

just over this weekend I have inherited a family parrot. He or she has been in my family for 50 years. Not sure how old he is as he was captured in a tree in my grandparents back yard 50 years ago. He has been with my grandparents all these years. My problem is that since they died no one wanted the bird so I said I would take him. When I went to pick him up I was appalled at the shape he was in. (I have not seen the bird in years).the first thing I have done is to make an appt to take him to a vet. When I took him, he actually had roaches on him and in a pipe in his cage. He has lost all his feathers on his back and either his wings have been broken or are dislocated. His cage is to small and his dies has consisted of dry food from WalMart. Can someone give me some advice on his care until I can get him to the vet? I have changed his diet in that I am giving him fresh fruit and vegetables and pecans.I do think that he is feeling better but any advice would be appreciated.

I apologize for not seeing this message earlier. I see it was posted almost a week ago. I hope his vet appointment turned out as good as can be hoped for. Did your vet do a complete blood work up along with a full physical examination etc? Did he/she instruct you on a healthy diet? If any of your questions haven't been answered please let me know and I will be happy to help in any way I can!!! We would also love to see some before and after photos as I am sure he will get much better looking over time with loving care.

Thanks so much for your intrest in my parrot. I have taken some pics of him but do not know how to send them to this forum. If you can advise me I will send them right away. I did take him to the vet, and although he gave him a complet exam, he did not pull any blood for a workup. I guess that will be done on the next visit. The vet was not even sure Pat would survive this ordeal. Pat's right wing is broken at the shoulder, it seems to be a recent break. The vet bandaged it but said he was to weak for him to try to repair it at this time. That too will be on the next visit on the 5th. He gave me an antibiotic, drops for pain and vitamins. Also a high potency food for him. He is eating very well so far, but today for the first time, his breathing seems heavier than it has been. The vet said his lungs were clear but that was on the 5th so I am concerned about it. On another note, as I have handled him a great deal, he has become very affectionate with me. He nuzzles me and wants me to scratch his head all the time. Again, if anyone has any advice for me I would love to hear it. Thanks!
