Has anyone ever grown their own fresh greens for their zebra fnches by planting some of their food seeds in small containers of potting soil then placing the growing sprouts - container and all -- in the cage for the finches to enjoy? Does anyone know if there is any danger of poisoning the birds by doing this?

No there is no problem with putting some fresh greens in with your Zebras...I have two myself and they love to use the greens to make nests with as well as chew on
