Breeding birds should I move their cage

limpyduckling Mar 25, 2008 03:10 PM

Sugar and CJ have been breeding for over a week now. There are no eggs yet but I expect them real soon. I think he couldn't figure out what to do at first he is 1 year old. Anyway they are staying in the nesting box a lot during the day. They have been there most of the day today. Their cage sits beside my computer desk next to my chair. I don't want to disturb them when they start sitting on the eggs. Should I move their cage to the other side of the room when before they start nesting. Or will they be ok where they are. I know when they decide to mate they don't care if im sitting here or not. I notice when sugar is in the nesting box and I sit down here he makes a squaking noise. Im not sure if it is to warn her or he is telling me he doesn't like the soft food and wants pellets Lol.

If they haven't actually started laying eggs yet then moving them would probably be fine, although I wouldn't if you can help it. If she is spending a lot of time in the nest box already then I would wait to move the cage and possibly put a cover over the side of the cage nearest to the computer. That way they shouldn't be bothered by you being near and won't have the stress of moving the cage which can kick them out of the breeding mood.

They are spending a lot of time in there during the day. At night they come out. I am feeding them soft food during the day. I want them to get their vitamins so I have been putting their nesting food and cockateil food. Also some pellets. Should they be getting soft food all of the time now?

I would still give them their usual pellets and/or seed mix just with plenty of soft foods added in. Many birds won't do as well if you completely switch to softer foods but will do great with the soft foods added in.

Also since they are spending all their time in the nest box I wouldn't move the cage instead just covering the one sice if you are afraid that being near them is causing too much stress.
