Itchy Cockatiels???

nymph Mar 25, 2008 11:08 PM

Hi. My cockatiels are babies. They have only come home within the last 3 weeks, after completely weaning. They came from a clean home into a clean home, from an excellent breeder. I have noticed that they seem to be itchy. They are scratching some and preening themselves, and each other a lot. I have never had cockatiels this young before so I was wondering if it had to do with feather growth?? I'm gonna contact the breeder, but I thought I might check in here to!! Thanks!!!

Yes check with the breeder to make sure. I have had many young birds both personally and through the rescue and the younger ones getting in full feathers do definitely scratch more. This isn't the only reason they scratch which is why I said to also contact the breeder but it is one reason. Usually you will notice more blood feathers and/or feather sheaths at this time and they will scratch, preen and pick at them which helps the feathers unsheath faster. Watch when handling them not to rake against the blood feathers too hard as it can cause some pain to the chicks. They usually will enjoy a good scritch though as long as you are careful!
