Food choices?

Hi,I have had my Cockatiel Sammy for coming up on 2 years now. He was hand fed from the eggs and is a beautiful White Face "I think thats what they call it" male. He has been on Commercial food since I got him. I was preparing my Iguanas food today listening to Sammy sing in the background and wandered, can I feed him fruits and stuff for treats? If so is there anything to avoid?

Let's see avoid avocado, onion, chocolate, caffeine, rhubarb, not much tomato, there are others that are arguable, and I am sure still others I have left off the list, but if you use good sense you should be able to give your bird a healthy diet. If you are feeding your iguana good healthy foods (squash, greens, all sorts of veggies, fruit) your cockatiel can have bits of the same types of foods you feed your iguana and pretty much avoid the same types of foods. We work with rescue iguanas and birds so when preparing iguana meals and birdie salads, a lot of the same things go in each. We give our iguanas alfalfa but usually not so much the birds, unless it is fresh with the seed tassles. They both love the sweet potatoes and seem to enjoy picking through the colorful veggies and other foods. Both like a little pasta mixed in at times. If your cockatiel doesn't act interested at first offer it in varieties of ways. Some would rather have it diced or shredded, others mixed together in a salad, some like it hung from clips or skewers so be creative and keep trying!

Ok thanks, Our Iguana for the most part get a mixture of dark greens "Callard, Spinach, exc mixed at the store" as well as a couple different types of commercial food.

You should give your cockatiel rich dark green leafy veg & brighty orange, red fruit & veg.
Here is a list of edible foods for your all parrots, including cockatiels:
http://eclectusparrots.net/fruitandveg
& if you scroll down that page there is also links to sprouting, herbs, edible flowers etc.

Cockatiels are leafy green & grassy eaters mainly so give him loads of veg & use fruit only a treats. Herbs, sprouts, safe foliage & edibles are a must for them.
