Whats wrong with my parakeet?

slashsnkpt Jan 12, 2008 12:44 PM

lately my parakeet hasn't been trimming his beak. He hs a few coddle bones (at least, I think thats what they are called) to trim his beak on and also a perch made put of some kind of stuff that they trim their beaks on. There is another parakeet in ther with him, and she is doing fine. Why would he not trim his beak like that? I mean, it's so long that it's touching his neck, and it's starting to irritate the skin there. Any suggetions? I didn't know if I should trim it, I'm worried that if I do, the beak might crack or something.

Definitely get him to a vet to trim it. If you are not experienced in trimming them you can do major damage to the beak and may make your bird so it isn't able to eat and will essentially starve to death. It needs to be trimmed or ground off professionally as soon as possible or it will do your bird some real damage. The unusual amount of beak growth can be due to vitamin deficiency or possible injury and some birds just do not grind them down enough without help. If you do not have an avian vet already try to find one or find someonw who is experienced in beak trimming (some pet stores claim to be and are not others are, so check around).
