How to Tame a Parakeet???

theguy67 Jul 21, 2008 09:15 PM

I just recently bought a parakeet and need to know the proper way to tame him. I almost feel sorry for him, always flying away when I walk by,so if you could give me something to start of with.

O yea!, I need some name ideas also, Thanks!!

Slowly, quietly, and with lots of treats.

There are books available at most pet stores that give specific techniques for training budgies so that you can get started.

They are bright little creatures and quite trainable. (Not that we have done much with ours) They are social and will follow the rules of the flock. Since you're the flock, yours will follow you.

As said above patience and time will be the main key to taming. Start slowly letting your bird get used to you being near the cage. When he/she flies away or flutters around just sit calmly near the cage talking in a gentle voice. After he seems used to you being near you can try offering a treat (such as a spray of millet) to coax him over near you. Don't make quick moves just be patient. When ready to let him out of the cage try taking him into a small room with a door and no mirrors or windows or cover the mirrors and windows. Then release him from his cage and sit patiently. Letting him come out of the cage and explore for a bit on his own. Then try offering the millet, just holding it patiently in your hand. This may take several tries and you may have to catch your bird during the first few times to return to the cage (which is why a small enclosed room helps!)

Sorry to ignore the question about naming.
Ours are all named after desserts. (I refused to let the kids name the first one that appeared "Snack". We had 20 cat/kitten fosters at the time that this one appeared in our duck enclosure and was eating with our ducks.)

Currently we have:
KeyLime Pie and Razzleberry
Pistacio IceCream and CaramelCustard
TapiocaPudding and ButterPecan
PlumPudding, Smudgemuffin and Cheesecake.

The current crop of baby budgies haven't been named yet.
