Lovebird seems to be losing feathers?

DumDee Sep 02, 2008 05:23 AM

I have two Lovebirds, male and female. They are around 8-months old and seem to be typical Lovebirds i.e. female bites etc). However my concern at the minute is that the male seems to have lost feathers on it's lower back above the tail, i'm not sure if they have been plucked or fallen out (or just me being paranoid) but you can see the skin thorugh the feathers.

I just wondered if this is a common problem and if anyone has any advice for me?

Thanks in advance

It seems to be common for the female to pluck the male. I would keep a close eye on both of them to try to see if this is the case. If the female is indeed plucking the male they will need to be separated as they have been known to mutilate their mates/cagemates enough to cause open wounds which won't heal. If the female is not plucking the male he could have an infection or bacteria etc that is causing him to lose his feathers or to pluck them himself which isn't quite as common in lovebirds but can still definitely happen.
