have the hens investigated the nest boxes?
are they preparing the boxes?
are the cocks doting over the hens?
are the hens receptive to the doting?
have you seen copulation?

do you know what to do if the hens become egg bound?
do you know how to rear chicks should they be abbandoned or if the hen dies?

yes the hens have been looking at it alot more often than they usually do.
yes the cocks are feeding them and preening.
no i havent seen them "doing it."

yes i know how to take care of an eggbound hen.
yes i know how to reer the chicks if something goes wrong with the hen.

They look good, but only they can decide if they are going to breed.
Our colony has made it abundantly clear to use that they will pick their own mates and have kids in their own time. What we humans want is totally irrelevant to them.

You can provide them with the necessities for breeding, but you can't make them breed.

thats true thank you im just hoping they would breed.

Once they start they don't tend to stop, so be careful what you wish for.
(Our three pairs had 25 offspring last year and are well on their way to topping that this year.)
Be sure you have a place to send/give/sell the babies to.

Yes that is definitely one thing I would stress. Do not breed your birds unless you already have places to take them (sell them, give them away etc).

I have seen too many people want to breed birds as a hobby and become overrun with them. Either they thought they were a great money-making opportunity or else just thought it was "neat" to have all the baby birds around. If you do it right especially with smaller birds you will not be bringing in a lot of money. Even budgies if being bred need to see a vet. Just because they are a "cheaper" bird doesn't mean their care is cheaper.

My sister-in-law decided she wanted to breed finches to sell and thought she had places for them all. Within the year she had all of her cages full, no one wanted them she advertised on every site imaginable and still couldn't place them. She even tried giving them away over the "trading post" and except for one hoarder (she is now getting professional help but that's another story) that had 75 birds in her house already no one was interested (she didn't give them to her LOL!)She finally turned them over to the rescue and we were able to finally get them to quit breeding after taking out nests, covering them up early to limit daytime and on several of her pairs we eventually had to separate them because even after all that they would continue laying eggs. We even got to the point we had to replace eggs with "dummy" eggs so the females would quit laying at least for a while!

Agreed. I think we just about break even.
