WoW, it's been 4 days since last hatch,

jackskeets Sep 12, 2009 03:57 PM

And this morning there's 5 hatchlings! the baby looks sort of ...well dead in the pic, but he's not, strong and wigglin around wow! and Sea has the last 4 eggs all bunched up right by her too, will it be a record clutch?! lol this is absolutely amazing!

Unfortunately I have to go get batteries for the good camera, so this pic was taken with my phone, but it's still a pic

OH! and skye had been very gloomy the last few days, but with the addition of a new nest box, she seems like her old self again:D i don't think she will ever lay eggs, but I think she just likes having her own box for some reason..silly bird

Having a nest box seems to make some females calm down. Others it will put into immediate egg laying mode. Hopefully she is just one of the calmer ones LOL!! Good luck with your five babies and the four waiting. Good to see the updates

still growing strong, and only 2 of the 9 eggs are left unhatched! Mom and Dad are always rushing around eating and drinking so they can get in there and feed all them babies! The sounds coming from the box are adorable

I snapped a new pic, again with the cell phone, so not the best photo. But they all pile together in the corner when I open the top, so you can only clearly see 5, but there's also only 2 eggs left. Seems to be going great, except that I wish they'd get all hatched and fledged so I could clean out that box! pew! can I clean it now? or would Sea freak out?

I didn't see this when you first asked about cleaning. I would say it is definitely a good thing that you did clean it now so you could remove the two that had died and the last of the eggs. It sounds like even though you "distrubed them LOL" that they are happy to have a nice clean home. In semi-tame to tame birds it is usually fine to clean out the nest box when it gets too dirty or smelly just being careful of eggs (usually don't clean until all hatched etc). In scared or untamed birds it can cause them to peck at their babies and step on them etc possibly injuring them if you disturb them too much in cleaning. Either way if it is getting too smelly etc it does need to be cleaned just be careful how much disruption you cause and make sure mom and dad don't get too aggressive with babies. In your case even though they were upset it seems they were just fine to have fresh bedding etc.
