growing! When will they take the leap?

jackskeets Oct 04, 2009 10:33 AM

All 5 babies are doing wonderfully! And each one is colored different too=D

The youngest is about a full week behind the next youngest, but he's growing like a weed as well. The oldest 2, actually even #3, are popping up into the box door. They argue over who get's to be there, then one comes up and they come out like half way! They lean down and chew on the perch, but none have come all the way out yet! The first two hatched sept 4th and 6th, shouldn't they be out yet? They sure look full grown!

The first baby hopped, or fell, out of the box! I'm not sure if this is baby #1 though. But it may be, he's #1 now I guess!

He can fly, but is still pretty clumbsy. He (I have no idea, he or she.) He's flying better by the minute.

Salty was just staring from across the cage for a long while. But he finaly went over and investigated the new little one and they're standing together alot now He will step up already, I'm sure just a reaction to a finger tapping his leg, but cute!!!

I only help him for a few seconds but how sweet that was!

And receive and receive...lol

#2 Now known as Ashes, hopped out of the box late in the evening. She (Guessing of course) is a little leary of the big birds, but she's getting the hang of her wings as well, and standing better on her perch this morning than last night! boy do they learn fast!

And this is where Ashes and Powder spent thier first night out of the box. Late in the night I saw all the adults up by them too. I guess that's the best sleeping perch

Glad to hear the whole flock is doing well. It is always so great when they first start to fly and will step up and meet you I will have to check back and see the pics later as for some reason my computer won't load any pics for me to see right now on this site or in my emails. I think it is just my internet though so I will check back to see if I can see your pretty baby birds later I always like all the pics to show how everyone is doing

I call babies 3 &4 thing 1 and thing 2 because they are identical! I keep trying to see a difference, and there's none, except that their cere's look like they may be turning different colors. so maybe 'fraternal twins'...lol boy and girl? we'll see as they grow I guess

Unfortunately, I looked in the box to see if baby 5 is almost ready to join the flock...and there's more eggs in there! I don't mind if they want to breed more, I have several people who would like a baby, but I wanted to get rid of the in the cage box and move them to the new out side the cage box. Can I just move them and mom and dad will follow? If they won't follow the eggs, I may just toss the eggs. that seems kind of mean though

They really do need a break from egg laying. Most tamer birds will go into a new space or clean space if their eggs are moved into there. If at all possible I would remove the nest box though either if these eggs don't hatch or even if you have to get rid of the eggs. The hen can become very undernourished even if you are feeding all the right foods because of the amount of calcium and other nutrients involved in laying and caring for new babies. I would suggest a year between breedings although some breeders only wait 6 months. The longer in between the better as the hen will have a chance to regain all her strength and be healthy to care for a new set since she has been doing well with these. Maybe by then if you are having potential homes for them your other budgie can have found a new mate as well.

Glad to hear that thing 1 & 2 are doing well also. Great to hear what good luck you have been having with your babies!

I was planning on removing the box when the last one left it, but he was hatched a whole week after the twins, and is still in the box *sigh* I guess I just hope the current eggs don't hatch before he leaves. Once he does I'll kick Sea out and get rid of the eggs. I think these guys are worse than the old hamsters I used to have! lol

The rest are doing very well, and it's been so fun watching Pepper coaxing them each out as they're ready. He gets up and feeds them just enough to make them almost come out, then he flies to a perch a few inches away and calls to them. hehe, while they hollar for more and finaly reluctanly they hop all the way out, then he runs over and feeds them some more It's really cute.

But yes, it is time for a break for poor Sea. She's getting very good at the whole 'momma' thing, but every momma needs a little time away from *diapering*

well I moved #5,now called Baby, to the new nest along with the four new eggs. Baby took this as a sign that it was time to leave the box for good.=D She looks just like her momma Sea, and is eating the seeds and spinach along with the others.

However, someone didn't like the 4 eggs in the new box, because I found all 4 cracked on the bottom of the cage. I don't know who did it, but I decided that maybe it was a good thing, and removed the box altogether. And funny thing, the birds are all getting along and being much quieter with no nest box.=D

Powder (baby#1) has moved to his new home, just a few houses away from us. Since there are no more nest boxes, and 7 fit just perfect in this big cage, I'll just be keeping the rest Unless someone I know really wants one, I have no desire to 'get rid' of any of my precious babies..lol

If I do decide to provide a box in the spring, I'll make sure I can move the breeding pair to their own cage, since 5 extra heads poking the new babies might be annoying.

And so, we love our big little flock

Good luck with your "extended family". It sounds like they will have a lot of love and good care. It's good to know that one has found a different good home where you can still check up on them from time to time. Yes with that many in a cage if you ever do decide to breed some of them again I would definitely move them to a different cage. The only other thing I can say is watch them when they hit maturity as sometimes one will decide to be a bit more aggressive or you might notice one getting picked on a lot. In those instances that one might need a new cage or new home. Otherwise as long as you are not trying to breed all the siblings and not providing nest boxes for them they should all get along fine with all the toys and perches you provide.
