Greetings....just new here....I am wondering if budgies need gravel......I have heard no and yes.....now I'm confused....thanks for any info.......
You will keep hearing conflicting info on this no matter what my answer is LOL! IMHO no they do not need gravel. I have had budgies, retired breeders, babies, young, adults etc for close to 25 years, and I do not offer gravel. My aunt had three that she kept gravel in at all times and two became impacted from it. Budgies do well with mineral blocks and cuttle bone but not always with the gravel. You will have others that will tell you they have always given their birds gravel and never had any problems and I am sure that is true for many but since all of mine have remained healthy without gravel and I have seen the bad things that can happen when using gravel with budgies I do not offer it and would not recommend it.
Thanks so much for this info.....I have a bit of gravel in a seed cup but will take it out and replace it with a mineral block and cuttlebone....I'm also feeding him good quality seeds and a bit of pellets and of course some fresh veggies and fruit. This looks like a great site.....
It sounds like you are doing great. And it is always nice to see new interested faces around
Thanks.......now I am trying to find a couple of names for my new budgies.....the second one I haven't got yet.....but I should have a second one in about a couple of weeks......
I would love to hear the names you decide on. We always seem to go with "themed" names for each type of bird. Our budgies are currently "charm, lucky, shamrock, clover"--get the picture
Our lovebirds are more Hawaiian type names, Nani, Hoku and Manu. Our finches are spices Nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, salt pepper etc. Our cockatiels are "weathery" Sunny, Snowy, Cloudy, Rainy, Foggy, Crispy, Dusky and Moony. We did have a whole line of "harry potter budgies and our bigger birds names are all over the place, we have Lewy, Lulu and Lolita the CAGs. We have Aztec, Maya, Alex, Buddy, Jasmine, and Jayde the Amazons and I could keep going on and on but I already have so I will stop for now
