Gettin' a TAG!

PhunkeyPhish Aug 04, 2010 11:11 AM

Adopting a TAG on Saturday! I currently have a green cheek conure of 13 years and work with a couple macaws at a small zoo. While I love my green cheek, I am stoked to be getting a bird of this caliber of intelligence! He's in his late 20's and I have been told is a handful... but I'm up for the challenge! Anyone have any suggestions or comments for preparing for an African?

Was wondering what you guys think of changing an old bird's name? The previous owners haven't done much work with this old guy... so would it be ok to give him a new name?

New names are okay if a bird hasn't learned its old name, if the old name has bad connotations (such as an abusive owner using it) or if you name it something similar. A new name can cause confusion if a bird is well trained with an older name.

As far as suggestions, PATIENCE LOL! And persistence and time and more patience LOL! Timnehs do not have all the same behavior problems that congos will many times develop instead they have different ones. That being said I love both my TAG and my CAGs Congos have more of a tendency to feather pluck if not given enough attention and things to do, whereas timnehs have more of a tendency to become very nippy if not worked with or entertained as much.

Do you have any specific questions about your TAG? We would love to hear how it is going so far.
