Ducks without enclosure but with island?

LightflowMark Oct 24, 2008 03:12 PM

Hi,
We've got a large pond with a small floating island, and plenty of shelter around the banks. My wife would like to get some call ducks, but we don't want to enclose the pond. Will the ducks live happily on the island without an enclosure, or will the get eaten by foxes?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, and yes.
Call ducks will do well outside. Remember that they come equipped with little down vests, the same down that we humans spend large sums of money for to put in our winter jackets.
Yes, they will get eaten by predators.

Ours are put in our poultry shed at night and when we are gone to reduce the chances of predation.

We have a neighbor who has the same setup as you have explained. He has a large pond with an island in the middle and thick vegetation around the pond. He doesn't have call ducks, he has Pekins and has lost a few to predators. You may want to provide some other shelter or pen for them to use at night.
