Male mounting male?or female?

felicitynemo Feb 05, 2009 12:43 AM

my male nearly 2 year old pekin is doing the "naughty dance" with my 9 month old Rouen that is supposed to be male. And rouen is letting him! When can i tell that my rouen duck is male or female? Or can my ducks be gay?
When rouen duck is happy he does a rubber ducky squeaky "dewey" sound. he does it also when i'm near, when i call his name, and..when he (or she?) is letting Pekin mount.

Ducks do things like that. (Birdbrain is an insult for a reason!) Don't worry about it too much. If you add some hens to your mix, they'll get things sorted out.

By now, you should know for sure if the rouen (or was it a mallard?) is a male or female. He/She should have its colors and curled tail feathers. Also, if it quacks, it's a female. If it has a whispery, quiet quack or grunt, it's a male.

IF it is a male, then this is a display of dominance. It's not unusual. My hens do this to each other. My drakes (when I had more than one) did as well.
