hair missing in some places, skin scaling/flaking off on neck

ElusiveKimmaby Sep 26, 2004 11:08 PM

my horsey has quite a problem. his skin is coming off in super-sized flakes, maybe more like scales. he's also missing a few patches of hair on his face. he's got a few places on his neck and legs that have something like a weird dark gray crust too, and if i curry comb them they come out, but it takes foreeeeeeeeeeever and a day, and still doesn't come out very thoroughly. has anyone else ever heard of this?
another problem he has are these funny open sores he's getting on the back of his feet. i'm really worried about this, what do you guys think these things could be?

well the skin issue could be a million plus things. I had a problem similiar to that and just recently moved. It cleared up! So, it could be allergies.
As far as the open sores go, my horse has that problem too. I finally figured out what it is. When doing activity (such as jumping or even just doing flat work), your horse could be overstepping with hi back feet and hitting his front ones. I bought sport boots with pastern protection and it stopped. You might want to try that.

No, it's not that. These sores are one the back of his back feet, not his front ones. He also doesn't do that much work, we just got him a little over 2 weeks ago, and when I ride I don't go any faster than trot for right now because he likes to freak out and run off with me.
Also, I don't think it's allergies. For one, it's mostly only where he has white hair (he's a pinto). Also, it's mainly on his neck. Speaking of his neck, it's kind of wrinkly, not nice and smooth like on most. Not wrinkly like tissue paper, more like his skin folds much like the skin you think of on a pug or something. Like layers. It's hard to explain. Is that a bad sign?

i have no clue what to tell you. Getting a vet out is the best thing I can tell you.
You might want to make sure he isn't getting a sunburn since he is part white. That could contribute to his irritable skin.

You suggested making sure it's not sunburn. How do I go about preventing it? Do they make anything like horse spray with SPF?
Getting the vet out here is going to be VERY difficult... my dad is hellbent on avoiding them. He pretty much thinks they're all worthless and will simply charge us $200 to tell us either what we already know, or that he doesn't know. *sigh*

They do make sunscreen for horses. I'm attaching a link to one of the more popular ones that Stateline Tack provides in it's catalog. Just like humans, if you thinkit might be sunburn try applying some aloe vera on it. It might help regardless if it is a sunburn or not! That stuff is magical .

i don't think that link worked. Go to www.statelinktack.com and type in "sunscreen" under the search bar. It will show you the products they have.

Sounds like the most likely problem is either a skin infection or a really bad sunburn. Either one, you need to have the vet out to make sure that's what it is and to give the proper treatment.

If its sunburn, or if your horse has a lot of white or grey coat, especially with pink skin, you'll want to start keeping the horse up during the sunniest part of the day. Sunburn is bad enough but like humans, it also predisposes your horse to various types of skin cancer. They also make sheets that will help protect him from the sun without getting him too hot.

Good luck!

By contrast, LARPs tend to be rooted in a single location. It's just part of the method(to Buy WOW Gold). Thirty or more characters come together to interact, plot and do whatever those characters do. Again, if the player base is much smaller, you're really running a series of tabletops. While I'm not saying it's impossible to have (WOW Gold)adventure in LARP, that genre of story just isn't built into the format. As such, I question whether a WOW(RuneScape Gold) LARP would have the same feel as the tabletop or video games. It would take a skilled game master to make the LARP feel adventurous.
