Legs on a foal Can anyone tell me what to do??

paintedwind Feb 03, 2005 12:40 AM

Hello all i got my first foal this past year and it was love at first site. But within the first few days i noticed she stood with front legs pointed out. Opposite of pigeon toed. Problem is i called the vet and she said to give it a couple of weeks. Well over those weeks i did start to see some difference. When farrier started coming out it seemed better as well. She is still showing it some. She is not a year yet born May 1 2004. Is it too late to try and correct this or will she completely grow out of it? There are times you cant tell at all then there are those times you can see it in the way she stands Mainly in the ankle fetlock down if that makes any sense. I would appreciate any advice on this.
Thanks and hope to hear from yall

Without seeing it, it's hard to say! What does your farrier say? They would know if it was correctable with trimming and shoeing or not. At this point, the joints and bones that far down are pretty much what they will be but depending on how bad the deviation is, it can sometimes be corrected slightly so that the horse stands better without harming the joints. However, some deviations can't be fixed and you just have to work around them.

On the bright side, toeing out is much better than toeing in, and as long as its not severe, usually isn't going to cause problems.
