appaloosa personality info

Jer-Jer Aug 27, 2005 08:37 AM

Hi there!!!
I am brand new here and am enjoying reading your forum.
I have an appaloosa gelding, 13 y.o. and I just bought him a month ago. He is just the sweetest boy and SO personable, and I have gone on all sorts of websites for just plain ol' personality talk, and can't find any. Can any of you share some stories with me about any appy's they have and their personality? All I read about is what their history is and that they are versatile etc etc. I know and appreciate all that, but just want some interaction with some people about what they love about appy's.
Can anyone help me understand my boy better?
Thankyou to everyone.
J

Hi,

Sorry to say I do not have the info your looking for , just popped in to say say how much I admire the Apaloosa. My childhood dream was to have a gorgeous horse one day, have everything but, LOL. I used to watch comboy and idian shows just to see the beautiful horse they rode.
At 7 years of age, wanted a spotted indian horse or FURY would have been great too, hahahahhaa !

I do love talking to people about their horses and read about ones I like. Which is all of them Yours is supposed to have such a wonderful disposition, and they are so beautiful, I just love their spotted coats.

I think the forums are so very quiet right now because of summer coming to an end, vacations and school starting in the next week or so, people have alot of things to do. Stick around I'm sure someone with experience and info will jump in and chat with you about your new friend.

I would absolutely LOVE to see a picture of your new horse hes sounds STUNNING ! PLEASE *hint hint*

Thanks, for letting me DREAM, hope to see you again,

Hi J,
I wish I could help you but I'm a dog person who occasionally leaves my dog house and visits some of the other forums. I would like to welcome you to PetHobbyist and hope someone comes along shortly so that you can share your stories. You don't happen to have a shih tzu also...do you? LOL We have a gal on our shih tzu board who use to have horses. I'm not sure what kind though.

Well, you seem to be collecting people who love horses but don't have any. I had one years ago. He was an Arabian, named Arab. Showed him in jumping. He loved to jump and was good at it but crowds of people made him nervous and then he acted a fool. I was young and enjoyed him as just a riding horse for fun. Currently I have cats (17 of those) 1 dog and a hamster. We would love to see a picture of your new baby. Welcome to our forum!!

Hi there!

Sorry I don't get on as much as I used to and I was out of town when you posted this so my response is a wee bit late!! But there are app folks out here We have a pasture full of them and I believe they are about the best breed you could have lucked into...of course I might be a little bit biased!

So tell me more about your guy!! They do have personality, don't they? I know each one of mine do, and a couple have enough to share if needed! We're in the process of halter training this years weanlings, and it's just a whole lot of fun getting to know each of their unique characters.

Hi there!
Oh your pics and messages have been wonderful! Thankyou to everyone who has written. And I know you are waiting for pics of Ben. I will get them on here. Can someone tell me how? I have never done that before and don't have a clue as how to start. Please bear with me.

Yesterday was the fall fair parade in our town and I decided to put him in it even tho' I don't know if he has ever been in one. Well, leading him...........very good but so wild eyed about some things and always had to have his shoulder on me. That is if he wasn't trying to jump on me and wrap his little arms and legs around me. Balloons popping, no problem. He even inadverently popped one himself. Little cars zooming around his feet, no problem. Lead him, no problem. Just don't get on him. I tried a few times throughout the parade and he was trying to knock me out with his head and"oh my god, oh my god, I don't know what to do!" reaction. So I'd get off and lead him, he was fine. I got so tired of walking I sat on the back of a float on a bale of straw, held his lead rope and he just walked behind like an old plug. After the parade, a very good friend of mine that has probably forgotten more about horses than I'll ever know came over and wanted to see why I was so upset. So she got on him. Same thing, head tossing, not going to listen. So she loosened the saddle looked for something under the blanket, rearranged everything, string girth and all, loosened off his bit so it would fit better, and ta-dah! he was his old self again.
So last night I went a bought a neoprene girth, and a jointed copper rollerball snaffle bit instead of the copper low port non-jointed curb bit that he was chewing on and clanking his teeth on all day. But the people that used to own him said he did that as a nervous thing so I didn't really give that much thought. So I tacked him up last night with all his new toys and he was a dream. Doesn't give as easy to this bit, but with practice doing serpentines? and such I hope this will come. Anyone have any ideas on to help him be more responsive to the bit? And any ideas on how to make him not want to run when he is on the lawn? I ride in my yard and on the lawn. When he gets good footing like the lawn, easy on his feet, he wants to run. Put him on the laneway of course slows right down because it is gravel.
Whew! I am so sorry for the long letter, but any and all replies would be wonderful. I just want to ride. I want to make him comfortable. I want him to love me and take care of me as well as I take care of him. I don't want to run. I want him to be VERY careful and responsive to me. Maybe we just don't know each other well enough yet. But he does lean his shoulder on to mine, as long as we are touching, when he is feeling a little unsure of things. I think that is a good sign?

Take care and thanks for listening.
Jer
