4 y/o green pony : heavy on the bit when cantering..how do i prevent this rapidly growing habit?

I am currently training my trainer's 4 y/o green pony (which he bought for his daughter to ride and show in a short/mini stirrup class). It means a lot that he is giving me this privilege and i want to do a really good job with the pony. The only troubles i have been having lately is that at the canter he will either suddenly pull his head down applying much pressure on the bit or slowly increase the amount of weight he applies to it.I have tried martingales/rein sizzling ((slight tugging on the left and right reins for a few strides to put his attention on something else

First of all I was wondering if you have asked your trainer how to correct the problem.Seem to me thats the place to start. If thats not an option try to change back and forth between a trot and lope.Transitions help to keep the pony light on the bit. Also you may want to do some backing and hill work to build up his back mucles to help him collect better. When he drives from behind by lifting his back it helps him to balance and stay lighter on the forhand.
Good luck with your project.
