I Need Help W/ Getting My First Horse.

advertiserlove Apr 09, 2007 05:07 PM

Hello everyone!
I'm 16 years old, for starters. & I made a deal with my parents that if I saved up $25,000 that I should be able to buy myself a horse. Well, a million dollars later after starting multiple online businesses...I've decided that it's time that I get the horse that I've always wanted.:]
I'm new to it all, though I do alot of trail riding locally at stables. I don't live in a mansion or have many acres of property in my back yard, so I'll need to board the horse that I purchase. I plan on boarding it at a stable that feeds it, baths it, clean up after it, and lets it roam..ect. So that part I will not have to deal with.
Here are some questions, I'd appreciate your answers VERY MUCH.
1.]How much time should I expect to spend with the horse?
2.]How much should I expect to pay for the horse & its needs in total annually?
3.]What will I need for basic supplies?
4.]What else do I need to know?
5.]Is there a best starter horse breed? Im 5'5'' and 135 lbs. by the way.
I'm sorry for bothering yall. I hope you also know that I plan to give the horse I purchase a good life-I'll be doing more research.

The thing I like about leasing is until you find the perfect one this may be the way to go. Advantages are that if there is a conflict between you and horse there is no long term obligations compared to owning. What does your lease entail??

thank you so much for answering! the lease that im looking at has no minimum contract for the lease, so it's a month by month basis sort of thing. Which I think is great! Thanks for replying!

I own a SPB gelding, really nice mover (HUS) and only spent $2500 on him, I lice in chicagoland area, board is $360 a month some places are as high as $500.
Leasing is a great idea, it will help you find a great match.
