How much room do cattle need?

Amanda E Mar 03, 2004 10:58 AM

I don't know if anyone will read this, since this forum is inactive, but here goes nothing...

I've been tinkering with the idea of getting some cattle.

I really need to do A LOT of reading up before doing so, but I figured I'd ask to see if the land thing is even feasible. Right now it's not since we live in the city, but we're thinking of moving to somewhere more spacious.

At the bare minimum, I'd like to get 2 cows, possibly adding a bull later. How much land would 2-3 animals need?

Thanks.

That question is a lot trickier than it appears I would recommend having at least an acre per cow but there's leeway there depending on what is on the acreage. If you don't have a lot of good quality and hardy grass, you'll need more acreage, or you'll be feeding a lot of hay. Also, if you're in an area that gets hit by rainy seasons or droughts, you'll have problems with the cattle overgrazing or crushing tender plants into the mud.

The best source of information for things like this is your local ag. extension agency because they will be familiar with your weather and grasses!

Good luck with moving to the country and getting some critters
