new to goats have some ?

thezoo Apr 05, 2005 11:27 PM

hi all
i am trying to find out as much as i can about goats and the care of before brings any home. so i think asking people is one of the best ways to find out the things you dont read about. what i would like is to hear some of the "i could just @#&*%#@ you @#$%*& pain in the $%^^$# goat!" every one does it all animals will drive you just crazy! but when it is all done you love them any way and feel bad for what was running through your mind. then a little spoiling and it is over. so every one try to talk me out of it this was i know just what to expect.

second some one told me "you dont want a goat they pee on there head, flys lay eggs in there dropping, they are dirtt and they are aways trying to hump you"

why do i want a goat? as a pasture companion for my horse. i was reading thet they are the best because they will eat what the horse dont and can stand up for them selfs. is there truth in this in your opp. i also think they are the funniest things i have ever seen my grandpa had one when i was growing up and always had fun with them how ever i was to young to reconize the care part of it, just the fun. my grandpa as pastaway some years ago so asking him is not going to happen.

thank you all very much hope you can help

Goats make excellent companions for horses. The ones who pee on themselves are the bucks, which you would want to avoid. Get a young doe or whether (nuetered or cut buck) as a companion.

You don't have to worry about certain breeds so a good, all around mixed goat will work fine. Do not get it from an auction, as most of those animals are culled for a reason or may pick something up at the auction house. Call someone in 4H, they usually have something you could use.

Also get one dehorned so the hornes do not get close to your horse's eyes or get caught in the fence.

My horse had a pet pygmy that she treated like her foal. Unfortunately, she ate something poisonious in the field and died. My fault, should have given them more room to graze.

Just came across this board and thought this was an interesting post. I own 2 goats and they aren't really all that nasty. They do no HUMP anything, they do NOT pee on their heads. They are actually quite intelligent if you handle them properly and keep them on a strict schedule. They are creatures of habit and are much like canines. My goats have their own "tricks" and personalities. To be honest, I'm very impressed with their intelligence and also about putting goats with horses, this is a way of calming horses. Goats seem to have a soothing affect on horses and many people on farms do this. Even pygamy goats can stay in the same pasture as a very large horse. ~Marie

thank you for you reply, since my post i have gotten 2 goats a wether and a doe. I am just in love with them!! they are just like dogs and seem happy to see me when i come out to see them the buck and play in the pasture as if they want me to join in! they seem and act sad when i leave. my husband tells me i spoil them but i feed water and talk to them when working in the barn. i think they are wonderful and am very glad i decided to get them. thank you all.
