what the heck is this thing?

I was on a business trip in California last week, working in a mountain observatory between the Mojave Desert and L.A., when I found this interesting (and kind of scary) insect:

Any idea what it is? It moved like a slow spider and looked like it was made of plastic. My hand is in there for scale.

That is a Jerusalem cricket, a common cricket of the southwestern states. I have heard people call them "potato bugs", but they are crickets.

Thanks for the info. These things are kind of freaky... I wouldn't want to wake up with one on my face.

Jerusalem cricket. The cricket pictured has a huge head, small front feet, and arched back. The mole cricket has large front feet for burrowing, smaller head, and a more torpedo-shaped body.
